BOOT DISK

  1. Making a boot disk

DEVICE=himem.sys

DEVICE=emm386.exe

DOS=high, umb

DEVICEHIGH=<your CD-ROM system driver> /D:MSCD000

Note: MSCD001 is fine but it much match what is in autoexec.bat

Note: If you do not know where to find and do not have your CD-ROM drivers try Frank's Place to find the drivers.

You can normally find that one as remarked out in your existing Config.sys file

Note: If you cannot find one but have the disk that came with the CD-ROM, then you can boot dos use the disk to install the CD-ROM from dos and then you will find the the lines you need in the config.sys and autoexec.bat files. Remember you do need the driver file on your boot disk.

MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD000

You can normally find this file in your autoexec.bat file remarked out by win95 if you installed from a previous version of win. If not try running your CD-ROM setup disk and it will create these files in autoexec.bat and config.sys. Remark them out on the c drive. You do not want to use this driver with win95.

Now for the finish:

find the <your CD-ROM system driver > and copy it to the disk in A

Then copy the following files to A:

c:\windows\himem.sys

c:\windows\emm386.exe

c:\windows\command\mscdex.exe

C:\windows\command\sys.com

C:\windows\command\format.com

C:\windows\command\fdisk.exe

Some files that are nice to have but not necessary - I do recommend having them

Edit.com     - You may want the help file too.

Regedit.exe

scandisk.exe   - You may want the help file too.

Scandisk.ini

Attrib.exe     -May be useful at times

deltree.exe  - Sometimes useful. Do not remove \windows before \program files !!!!

IMPORTANT:

After completing these steps, please try to boot with this disk and make sure that your CD-ROM is accessible.

You should keep this disk in addition to the one being generated as an emergency disk by win95 during install
